ABOUT THE EXHIBIT - “WINGS”

Over the past 10 years we have seen 180 school shootings with 356 victims.* Our children enter a seemingly safe environment and are then confronted with the underlying fear of violence on a daily basis. This exhibit invokes a similar uncomfortable experience within a traditional safe setting, and transports the viewer into the emotional experience children may feel in the classroom.

Juxtaposed is the beauty of sculpture with the unpredictability of gun violence, both objects crafted from the same earthly materials of aluminum and steel. However, the diametric opposition of their purpose remains vastly controversial.

-A portion of the net proceeds will be donated to saugusstrong.org-

-Images of the exhibit and opportunities for additional donations will be published on this site after the opening-

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Steven Mark is an artist, fabricator and maker. His work is informed by his first hand knowledge of materials at both a tactile and molecular level–in addition to the 25 years he has spent as the director of a metal fabricating operation, Steven also holds a degree in psychobiology, and patents in environmental chemistry. While some of his creativity has been to the benefit of his art and design clients, he has saved his best for his own artworks. The sculptures Steven creates raise questions relating to the role of fabrication in contemporary artistic practice and more semantic questions about the relationship of art to the human experience. The syntactical clarity of the works often belie a deeper phenomenal ambiguity, the illusion of their accessibility is illusive. Juxtaposed in a world of science and art the line of reality is often blurred.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Steven Mark conceived his gallery concept from the simple idea of trying to help local artists in the community show their work.  Often times new artists lack the ability and resources to produce gallery shows that could increase the visibility of their work.  Additionally,  many mainstream  galleries charge high commission fees and are more concerned about the bottom line rather than helping an artist establish a career.  At The Mark Gallery, artists have the opportunity to  market and show their work in a traditional gallery setting with commission fees that will never exceed 25%.  This allows the artist to experience a gallery exhibit, increase his or her visibility in the community, and gain experience within this venue setting with minimal risk, while still being able to make a living.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kaylee  is a ceramic artist, sculptor and creator. Her work embodies balance, connectivity and relationships between objects, and is influenced by her love of contemporary minimalism and the traditional wabi sabi aesthetic.
